Urgences Québec Emergency FireFighters

FIREFIGHTERS

The main diferences between the part-time training and the full-time training given by IPIQ.

The modular training program appeared when it was evident that professionnal firefighters ( at the time a prejudicial distinction towards their volunteer counterparts) needed a complete updating of their training. Because at the time theere was no such updating training available, it was decided to create modules of training to allow a uniformity in the training of the firefighters. With time, the volunteer firefighters have taken these updating courses, mainly because their was no other standardized training available for the volunteer firefighters.

The modular training is now a thing of the past, since 1997. Now, all firefighter training is standardized, for the carreer as well as the part-time ( formally known as volunteer) firefighters. For the full time student, the training consists of a one-year program instead of the old two-year program ( formally the1rst year was prevention, 2nd year was combat), mainly toward the actual firefighting aspect of the firefighters job. For the part-time student, the training is offered in 4 levels:

Level 1 Training time: 375 hours

This level consists of 9 mandatory sections, that cannot be interchanged with other level courses.

Section 1 Work safety and health

Section 2 Principles of fire extinguinshing

Section 3 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus ( SCBA)

Section 4 Principles relating to buildings

Section 5 Tools related to firefighting

Section 6 Water Tools related to firefighting

Section 7 Ventilation techniques

Section 8 Fire procedures for low-rise building interventions

Section 9 Hazardous Material general interventions

Level 2

By section, training time of 270 hours. Must have completed the 9 section of level 1 before being allowed to start any of the following sections. The mention of Level 2,3 and 4 are indicative only. It is possible to combine sections of different levels to complete a level. The important part is to cumulate 270 hours for each level other than 1.

Section 12 Cleaning, protection and survaillance technicques

Section 13 Human relations in the work environment

Section 14 Physical training techniques

Section 18 Fire procedures in high-rise buildings

Section 19 Various fire techniques

Section 20 Psychological approach on scene

Furthermore, a college-level ( CEGEP de Montmorency) and a university-level ( Ecole Polytechnique) program named Fire Prevention Techinian exists. For this program, the training is the same for part-time and full-time students.
