Stephen Barry

If you've seen the cover of their latest cd "The Gold Record" then you may recognize that Stephen is sporting the gold suit which forms the basis of the cover graphic. It was given to him by his band on the occasion of his X0th birthday.

Without doubt, Stephen is considered the patriarch of whatever blues community exists in Montreal and in a career that spans over 30 years he's played with more blues legends than most of us will meet. On this occasion he and his band were backing up Vann "Piano Man" Walls.

Stephen also hosts the Sunday night jam at Bistro à Jojo on Rue St-Denis.

Michael Browne is one of the most respected blues musicians in Montreal. A very traditional player, he also gives lessons in all styles of blues, slide, and fingerpicking.

I asked him why, given the attire that other members of the band were wearing, was he dressed so sedately. Well, he had just finished opening for Ray Charles with the Suzie Arioli Swing Band and wouldn't have felt too comfortable in anything less traditional.

Andrew Cowan

One thing that Andrew Cowan and Michael Browne have always been known for is cool guitars. Jaguars, archtops, always a surprise, but never a Strat.

Andrew's been doing double duty lately, filling in on bass for Catfish at their Monday night gigs at Barfly.

Jody Golick rounds out the coverage of the "Best Dressed Band At The Jazz Festival". I was actually scared to ask where this jacket came from - just in case they had more of them.

Apologies to Martin Boorman and John McColgan. I just didn't like the shots I had of them. Next time.
