The art of the summary - part II

Tout comme il l'avait fait dans PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, De Palma développe cette technique de montage davantage en introduisant un résumé de toute l'action comprise entre la mort de Frank et l'apogée du pouvoir de Tony.  À partir de la 103ième minute du film et ce, au son de la pièce "Scarface (Push It To The Limit)" de Paul Engemann, le cinéaste nous présente la série de plans suivants d'une durée de 3 minutes 30 secondes:
Similarly to his efforts in PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, here De Palma develops the technique of the montage even further, to summarize the action occuring between Frank's death and the apogee of Tony's power. Starting at the 103rd minute of the film, and this, to the sound of Paul Engemann's "Scarface (Push It To The Limit)," De Palma presents a series of events in a sequence lasting 3 minutes and 30 seconds:

Avec la mort de Frank, Tony prend le pouvoir, et avec le pouvoir vient l'argent.
With Frank's death, Tony takes the power, and with the power comes the money.

Argent qui est à la base même...
Money which is at the base...

...de son association avec Sosa.
... of his association with Sosa.



L'Argent, toujours plus d'argent entre dans les coffres de Tony...
The money, always more money enters Tony's coffers...



...si bien qu'il doit trouver quelqu'un à qui le confier...
...so much that he must find someone with whom to entrust it...



...et on assiste à l'introduction d'un nouveau personnage: le banquier.
...and we are introduced to a new character: the banker.



Tony diversifiera ses placements et fondera la Montana Management Co...
Tony will diversify his investments, and establish the Montana Management Co...



...s'achètera une splendide villa...
...will buy a splendid villa...



...et offrira à sa soeur un salon de coiffure haut de gamme.
...and will present to his sister her own high-style beauty salon.



Tout en étant reconnaissante à Tony, les yeux de Gina...
While grateful to Tony, Gina's eyes...



...se porteront sur Manny; ce qui permettra au spectateur d'être témoin de la naissance de leur idylle.
...meet with Manny's; allowing us to witness the birth of their idyll.



Pendant ce temps l'argent, qui continuera à entrer...
During this time the money, which will continue to enter...



...deviendra vite un problème.
...will quickly become a problem.



Cependant, Tony négligera momentanément ces problèmes en raison de préoccupations plus immédiates...
However, Tony will temporarily neglect these problems in favor of more immediate
concerns...



...telles que son propre mariage avec Elvira.
...such as his own marriage with Elvira.



Mariage durant lequel on peut assister...
At their wedding we again see evidence...



...à la poursuite de l'idylle entre Gina...
...of the love between Gina...



...et Manny.
...and Manny.

Mais les rêves de tony atteignent bien vite l'excès comme l'achat d'un tigre comme "animal de compagnie"...
But the dreams of Tony quickly reach excess, such as the purchase of a pet tiger...



...un portrait démesuré de lui et de sa nouvelle épouse...
...an outlandish portrait of him and his new wife...



...ou encore de multiples gâteries pour sa soeur.
...and a multitude gifts for his sister.



Pendant ce temps, Elvira sombre de plus en plus dans l'intoxication par la drogue...
During this time Elvira sinks deeper and deeper into addiction, to cocaine...



...par l'alcool...
...to alcohol...



...et par la cigarette.
...and to cigarettes.



Intoxications qui démontre qu'Elvira n'est rien d'autre...  qu'une intoxiquée.  Cependant, le tout dernier plan montre qu'Elvira prend pleinement conscience de sa condition.
Abuses that show that Elvira is now nothing but an addict. However, the last shot shows that Elvira herself is fully aware of her condition.



Ce qui lui évitera, l'annihilation, qui est le sort réservé aux principaux membres de la distribution.  En effet, alors que Tony, Manny, Gina, Frank, Omar, Bernstein, Chi Chi, Ernie et Angel mouront, les personages de Sosa et de Mama Montana verront leur rôles respectifs de traficants et de mère anéantis.  Seule Elvira paviendra à s'échapper de ce cauchemar.
This realization will allow her to avoid annihilation. A fate from which none of the other principal cast members will escape. Indeed, whereas Tony, Manny, Gina, Frank, Omar, Bernstein, Chi Chi, Ernie, and Angel all die, and the characters of Sosa and Mama Montana see their respective roles of druglord and loving mother, destroyed, only Elvira manages to escape the nightmare.
