At the Cannes Film Festival to present his film MISSION TO MARS (out of competition), De Palma was interviewed by the Studio magazine in which he revealed his personal tastes in regards to the arts.

"Mon livre préféré est certainement Guerre Et Paix de Léon Tolstoï.  Pour moi, c'est la plus grande oeuvre littéraire jamais écrite.   J'aime tout dans ce livre : le style, la trame, l'ampleur de la saga, la multitude de personnages, la force des sentiments, l'époque historique...  Pour moi, Guerre Et Paix c'est Laurence d'Arabie en Russie.  Tolstoï est le plus grand écrivain qui soit, sans aucun doute!"

"My favourite book is certainly Leo Tolstoï's War And Peace. For me, it is the best literary novel ever written. I like everything about book: the style, the language, the breadth of the saga, the multitude of characters, the force of the feelings, the historical time... "J'aime beaucoup les impressionnistes : Monet, Manet, Degas...  J'aime la lumière qui émane de leurs tableaux, et la sérinité qui s'en dégage.   J'apprécie aussi beaucoup Picasso et Paul Klee, pour leur force et leur modernité.  Et les paysages quasi primitifs de Gauguin.  Chez les classiques, j'aime Rubens.  Toute la peinture hollandaise et plus particulièrement Vermeer, Bruegel et Van Dyck."
