La performance est inspirée sur la pièce originale des Euripides (écrite 500 ans avant Jésus Christ)
qui traitait du mythe de Dionysus et de sa revanche sur la ville responsable de la mort de sa mère.
The performance is inspired by the original Euripides play (written about 500 B.C.) which deals with
the myth of Dionysus and his revenge upon the city responsible for his mortal mother's death.

DIONYSUS IN 69 est un documentaire en image composite de Brian De Palma, Robert Fiore & Bruce Rubin.  Il fut réalisé à partir de deux performances de la pièce DIONYSUS IN 69, dirigée par Richard Schechner, adaptée par Schechner et le Performance Group et jouée au Performing Garage en 1969.  De nos jours, le Garage demeure un lieu théatral utilisé par le Wooster Group, le groupe qui vint après le Performance Group et qui inclut quelques uns des membres du Performance Group  -- bien qu'aucun d'entre eux de Dionysus in 69.
DIONYSUS IN 69 is a split-screen documentary by Brian De Palma, Robert Fiore & Bruce Rubin. It was made from two actual performances of DIONYSUS IN 69, directed by Richard Schechner, adapted by Schechner and The Performance Group, and staged at The Performing Garage in 1969.  The Garage is still an active theatre space, used by the Wooster Group, the group that came after The Performance Group, and including some of Performance Group's members -- though no one from Dionysus in 69.

DIONYSUS fut créé par les membres du Performance Group (auquel William Finley appartenait) sous la direction de Richard Schechner, qui amenait une nouvelle dimension érotique à la pièce grecque "Les Bacchantes".  L'intention de Schechner était de fusionner l'apect érotique et politique - le nombre 69 signifiait trois choses simultanément: la date, l'érotisme et le yin-yang (ils remettaient des "macarons 69" représentant l'aspect yin-yang aux spectateurs).   L'intention du groupe était d'explorer le langage théatrale, et pendant plus d'une année, plusieurs spectateurs vinrent assister à des représentations au garage du Performance Group dans Soho pour voir la pièce.   L'audience était alors invitée à participer au rituel de la mort du jeune roi Pentheus (William Shepard).
DIONYSUS IN 69 was created by the members of The Performance Group (to which William Finley belonged) under the direction of Richard Schechner, who brought a new erotic dimension to the ancient Greek classic "The Bacchae".  Schechner's intention was to fuse the erotic and the political - The number 69 signifies three things simultaneously: the year the play takes place, the sexual connotation and the yin-yang (they gave out yin-yang "69 buttons" to the spectators).  The group's intention was to explore the theatrical language, and for over a year, audiences came to the Performance Group's garage in Soho to see the play and to be in it.  The spectators were invited to participate in the death ritual of the young king Pentheus (William Shepard).

DIONYSUS IN 69 fut une forte influence sur le développement du style visuel de De Palma.  L'image composite devint l'une de ses marques de commerce.  Le film comprend également ses premiers plans-séquence tout aussi typique du cinéma de palmien: "Mon goût pour les très longues prises est né pendant DIONYSUS IN '69.  Certains plans font en effet pas loin de huit minutes".  De plus, quelques uns des plans du sacrifice du roi dans DIONYSUS IN 69 sont similaires à ceux de CARRIE, lorsque Sissy Spacek est aspergée de sang de cochon.
DIONYSUS IN 69 strongly influenced the development of De Palma's visual style.  The split-screen device became one of his trademarks.  The film also contains his first long takes which are typical of the de palmian cinema: "My taste for the long takes was born during DIONYSUS IN '69.  Some takes are almost eight minutes long."  Also, some of the shots of the sacrifices of the king in DIONYSUS IN 69 are similar to those in CARRIE, when Sissy Spacek is showered with pig's blood.
