  • Question: Is there a way to send electronic "sticky" messages through Windows 98 across a network without using e-mail? I would like to be able to send reminders, etc to other people connected to our network in the office?
Answer: winpopup.exe should be in the windows folder already. Each user must be running this. The easiest way to do this is to create a shortcut to winpopup.exe in the Startup folder of each machine and set the property of the shortcut to run minimized. You can message by computer name or username or to a work group. Users should be educated to minimize, not close the pop up window after getting a message.

WINSET.EXE
  • Found on the Win 98 CD in Tools\ResKit\scrpting\
This utility works like the DOS SET command, except that it modifies environment variables for Windows 98 global DOS environment. ( In contrast, if you run the SET command within a DOS session, the change applies only to that session. ) By including the appropriate WINSET commands in a batch file and then including that batch file in your Windows 98 Startup folder, you eliminate the need to an AUTOEXE.BAT file.

    WINSET variable=string

variable The name of the environment variable
string The value you want to assign to the variable

For example, suppose you use the following command in AUTOEXE.BAT to set the default parameters for the DIR command.

    SET DIRDMD=/OGN /P

To do the same thing with WINSET, you'd use the following command:

    WINSET DIRCMD=/OGN /P
